My garbage disposal is humming but not spinning. What do I do?

A humming disposal that doesn't spin is jammed. First, press the reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it still hums, use a 1/4-inch hex key in the center socket at the bottom to manually free the impeller. Never put your hand into the disposal. If neither step works within five minutes, call us  -  forcing it further can burn out the motor.

Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?

Replace if the unit is more than 8 years old, if it leaks from the main seal (not a fitting  -  that's repairable), or if the motor is burned out. Repair if it's simply jammed, if the reset button repeatedly trips, or if a fitting or flange is loose. New disposals start at $120 for basic 1/3-HP units; we also install InSinkErator and Moen units you purchase yourself.

What should I never put in a garbage disposal?

Grease, oil, and fat are the most damaging  -  they solidify in the drain line below the disposal and build up over time. Fibrous vegetables like celery and artichoke leaves wrap around the impellers. Coffee grounds, egg shells, and pasta create sludge. Bones over 1/4 inch thick can dull or crack the impellers. Run cold water during and after each use.
